BMW has begun serious competitive testing of a 450cc four-stroke enduro bike.
The bike was entered in the Puerto Lumbreras round of the Motocross World Cup in Spain on April 28-29.
It had actually appeared at a previous Germany enduro event, but this was the first time it was seen in the official BMW Motorrad Motorsport team colours.
The Germans are taking things seriously by entering the competitive E2 motocross class for 450cc four-stroke and 250cc two-stroke machines.
They have employed the services of five-times Motocross World Champion Joel Smets who is joined by seasoned off-road professional Sascha Eckert.
On the first day of the World Cup round, Smets finished 13th and Eckert 15th, while Smets retired on the second day with electrical problems and Eckert was 17th.
BMW Australia Motorrad marketing manager Miles Davis said the results showed the BMW 450 was "the real deal".
"The team are going to learn a lot by racing at this level. It is very exciting, Miles said.
Race testing of the enduro bike follows BMW's recent release of the G 650 series of dirt bikes and shows the Bavarian company's determination to tap into the rich off-road market dominated by the Japanese and Austrian manufacturer KTM.
BMW Motorrad Australia spokesman Alexander Corne said a 450cc production bike would not necessarily follow competitive testing even though it did with the 1200cc HP2 super enduro.
"This is not a confirmed model programme, just a prototype test for a concept or two," he said.
Typical of BMW, the bike will not be another 450 enduro clone, but something different, bristling with innovative technology.
It will be fuel-injected and include electric start, which tends to point toward market acceptance, rather than racing prowess.
The basic concept of the prototype is that aligning the mounting axis of the rear swing arm with the axis of rotation of the drive chain pinion will mean the length of the chain sag won't vary.
Benefits of this system, plus a longer swingarm and repositioning of the engine, are claimed to be better traction, lower weight, more stability and centralised mass.
To centralise weight, the fuel tank will be under the rider, the clutch on the crankshaft, the frame tubes straight ahead of the swing arm pivot, and the airbox up high for protection.
The engine has two upper camshafts, dry sump lubrication, fuel injection and an oxygen sensor regulation. The forward-tilting cylinder will allow straight air intake into the large airbox.
BMW has not released weight or power and torque figures, but is claiming "competitor level".
Looks great and being from BMW I'm sure well finished, my only concern will be cost. If they can bring it in near the KTM and Husky I'm sure it'll be popular. But then the Aprilia with the v-twin is the most appealing to me

BMW Tests New Enduro Concept in Competition
April 20, 2007 - BMW's new 450cc Sports Enduro motorcycle enters World Enduro Championship.
The involvement of BMW Motorrad in off-road sport has a long and successful tradition.
BMW not only wants to perpetuate this success story with high-capacity machines such as the HP2 Enduro (wBW report) but also extend its activities into the attractive and hotly competed 450cc capacity class.
For test purposes only, a BMW team will take part in races of the World Enduro Championship in the E2 class on a new single cylinder Sports Enduro on April 28th and 29th.
This high-prestige competition is to be held in Puerto Lumbreras in the south of Spain and will attract the world's top sports enduro riders and their bikes. In this tough competitive environment, BMW Motorrad will put its motorcycle concept - specially developed for sports purposes - to the acid test. In terms of engine and chassis, the machine has innovative technical solutions and these will be subject to testing under competitive conditions.
BMW Motorrad was able to recruit the off-road pros Joel Smets and Sascha Eckert as riders. With their experience and expertise they will help optimize the technology of the motorcycle. For this purpose alone, the BMW team will also take part in other well-known races during the course of the 2007 season.
